FourBlock Alum Striving To End Veteran Suicide

By FourBlock

Participation for VEThack’s annual Ruck March hit an all-time high in 2016

On September 17, hundreds of people gathered in New York City for VEThack’s 3rd annual Ruck March. Some came alone, some came in groups — all marched together.

During the event organized by FourBlock alumni Gene Wu, participants marched to raise awareness of veteran suicide. Countless packs and flags could be seen among the group as they toured Manhattan’s Upper West Side before reaching their destination: a barbeque at NYPD’s 20th Precinct.

VEThack’s initial reports indicate participation doubled for the second consecutive year — a staggering increase considering over 400 people marched in 2015. The continuous increase in participation is a testament to the event’s effectiveness in raising awareness about this vital cause.

Alongside FourBlock, many VSOs and supporting organizations participated in the march, including Bunker Labs, Team Red White and Blue, NYC Veterans Alliance, Team Rubicon, Stop Soldier Suicide, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, Veterans on Wall Street, GoRuck, and The Headstrong Project.

When the event began in 2014, 22 veterans across the country committed suicide each day. Now, in 2016, daily occurrences have decreased to 20 — a number that is still far too high. By continuing to march, VEThack will continue to spread awareness throughout New York City and beyond.
