BELLEVUE, WA – As part of an extensive new military support initiative, T-Mobile is providing FourBlock funding to launch its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), an online version of its best-in-class Career Readiness Program. The free program will be available to members of the U.S. military, veterans, and their families across the globe.
In addition to the launch of the open online course, T-Mobile’s support will enable FourBlock to grow its current programs, expand its in-resident course into new locations, and create a new course uniquely designed to assist in the career readiness of military spouses.
Since 2013, FourBlock’s Career Readiness Program has prepared transitioning veterans for meaningful, long-term employment at the nation’s top companies and organizations. To date, over 1,500 veterans have been supported through the foundation’s career readiness and mentorship programs. 94% of alumni feel FourBlock improved their transition from military to corporate life, 80% say they were inspired to pursue more challenging careers, and 87% say FourBlock opened up new career paths.
“At T-Mobile, we don’t just see the uniform… we see the family behind the uniform,” said T-Mobile CEO John Legere. “I was shocked – and frankly more than a little pissed – when I learned that over half of service members experience some unemployment after leaving the military and active-duty spouses have a 4x higher unemployment rate than the national average. Our country can do better! So we’re stepping up with our biggest hiring commitment ever and a new partnership with FourBlock.”
Developed in collaboration with T-Mobile and Columbia University, FourBlock’s MOOC features talks and lessons from a variety of professional guest lecturers, including Sebastian Junger, author of Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging. The online course removes previous geographic boundaries, allowing veterans anywhere to receive expert career readiness education at no cost.
“Thanks to T-Mobile, we are drastically scaling our resident Career Readiness Program and bringing it online to reach a nearly infinite number of transitioning veterans,” said Lauren Schulz-Carnes, executive director of FourBlock. “Veterans develop valuable skills during their service and our curriculum teaches them how to market their talents towards civilian careers.”
As part of the new initiative, the Un-carrier has also pledged to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses in the next five years. The company will also launch T-Mobile ONE Military on April 22, the biggest military discount ever offered in the world of wireless.
